Flawless skin= Flawless makeup

To ensure your makeup looks flawless, a healthy and well-prepped skin base is essential. I know we dont want to hear this, but its true!! Makeup will always apply smoother, look better and last longer on great skin.

I've collated some of the best tips below, which will help create the perfect canvas for any makeup, whether this is day to day or bridal:

1. Cleanse Thoroughly

Clean skin allows makeup to adhere better and prevents clogging pores. I like to double cleanse on an evening, especially if I've been wearing makeup during the day.

Tip: Use a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type (e.g., hydrating cleanser for dry skin, foaming cleanser for oily skin).

2. Exfoliate Regularly

Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, creating a smoother surface for makeup.

Tip: Exfoliate 2-3 times a week, but avoid over-exfoliating to prevent irritation. Choose an exfoliator with gentle ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs).

3. Hydrate with a Moisturizer

I'm sure we all know this one, but do we actually do it? Honestly??!!

Well-moisturized skin ensures a dewy, smooth finish that helps makeup glide on effortlessly.

Tip: Use a moisturizer that suits your skin type. For dry skin, look for a rich, hydrating moisturizer, while lightweight, oil-free formulas are ideal for oily skin.

4. Use a Primer

Now this comes with a caveat, one which I always discuss during my one to one lessons. I will always use a primer for a bridal application, as primers can create a barrier between skin and makeup, improving longevity and blurring imperfections. However, on a day to day basis, unless you have a specific skin condition, such as oily or dry skin, I actually don't think primers are always a necessity. It's more to do with products used and application techniques.

Tip: Choose a primer based on your skin concerns: mattifying primers for oily skin, hydrating primers for dry skin, and pore-filling primers for larger pores.

5. Apply Sunscreen

Sunscreen protects the skin from UV damage, which can cause the dreaded premature aging and dryness.

Tip: Opt for a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30, and allow it to fully absorb before applying makeup.

6. Address Specific Skin Concerns

Clear, even skin will make makeup application smoother.

Tip: Use spot treatments for acne or redness, and consider treatments for dark spots or texture issues to improve skin clarity, such as light therapy. I have a light therapy mask, but I've been terrible at using it so I can't provide any personal recommendations as yet, but once I do, I'll update on here!

7. Use a Hydrating Face Mist

A face mist can help lock in moisture and refresh skin, especially before makeup application.

Tip: Spritz a light mist onto the face before applying makeup for a hydrated, glowing base. There are loads on the market but I personally love rose water and glycerine, which are pretty inexpensive!

8. Eye Cream for the Under-Eye Area

The under-eye area is delicate and prone to dryness or puffiness.

Tip: Use an eye cream that targets puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines, ensuring a smooth base for concealer.

9. Drink Plenty of Water

Again- we all know this and its something I actively try to ensure I do daily, but some days im terrible at getting in that H20!!! Hydrated skin looks radiant, which enhances the overall appearance of makeup. Its also meant to be one of the best things for fine lines and wrinkles, as a hydration gives a lovely plump effect!

Tip: Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

10. Give Your Skincare Time to Absorb

Skincare products need time to absorb and properly set before applying makeup.

Tip: Wait about 5–10 minutes after applying your moisturizer or sunscreen to allow the products to fully absorb into your skin.

By following these tips and maintaining a consistent skincare routine, you'll have a smoother, healthier skin base that will help your makeup look flawless and last longer throughout the day!
